Today is gonna be a long post... probably some ideas i've been thinking over the past week on the bus.
i've been wondering what's the diff between the culture of the east and the west. Probably many asians think that the grass on the other side (west) is greener and "tastier". But is that really true? I've always wanted to migrate to America, but just can't for the moment becus of NS, and finacial issues in the family. Personally , i think that life over there would be much more enticing than what i face in Singapore daily. but, it that really the case? There would be many sacrifices. No asian food, the daily chicken rice, laksa, mee rebus, congee, tom yam goong.... no relatives or family around.... people treat u like a 2nd class citizen.... bullied in school..... all these sacrifices, are they really worth it?
To me, its would be worth it. To be born into a asian family , with values and morals, with relatives from Thailand, Malaysia and of course Singapore , it truly is something i respect. but at the end of the day, i hope to experience the best of both cultures. The west stresses on indiviual brillance, independence and innovation. And by bringing cultures from both sides together , that is something unique. Truthfully, if i had a choice, i would slog my guts out in the west and retire back in the east and i personally think that Thailand is gonna be a great place. My dad has already said it, he's gonna retire in Thailand, cheap golf fees, good food, life is just peaceful over there.
Obviously , there are chances that a person might not have the chance to go around visiting the world, but there is NEW MEDIA. Through the internet and TV, we all get the opportunity to experience the western culture everyday. So, staying in Singapore isn't really that bad, everyone had a roof over their heads, and we don't ever see beggars. Probably as youths, we just think that places such as America or Europe will give us a better life.
